In 1989 MB Games released HeroQuest, a board game set in the Warhammer World. The game had elements of role-playing and board games, and came with some high-quality miniatures from Citadel. I was immediately hooked and loved the game.
I picked up MB’s Space Crusade in 1991 which was similar to HeroQuest, but was set in the Warhammer 40k universe and involved Space Marines assaulting a floating space ship. Again, the game came with some high-quality miniatures and again, I loved the game.
These were standalone games, and I didn’t realise there was more to either system until a friend introduced me to Games Workshop and their games in 1992. I picked up White Dwarf, the magazine that Games Workshop produced (issue 148 as it happens), and was blown away by what was inside. The main feature of the magazine was a Warhammer Fantasy Battle report of a game involving Empire, Wood Elves and Dwarfs. It looked amazing, and really captured my imagination. It still does.
Since 2009 I’ve been involved in the Irish gaming community in a number of ways. I set up and maintain Wargaming Ireland, the home of Irish wargaming on the internet. I’ve played in two European Team Championships on the Irish Warhammer Fantasy team, captaining the team in 2010. I run NWG, Ireland’s largest independent wargaming event every September in Wicklow town. In 2011 I was invited onto the Irish Games Association (IGA) and chaired the Association in 2014. I was on the Gaelcon committees for 2013 and 2014. In 2008, I was a founding member of the North Wexford Gamers which evolved into the Last Chancers club in 2011 and based ourselves in Wicklow town.
From the start, I always believed that central to a great gaming community is an active club and a supportive gaming venue. It’s my belief that the War Room is is Ireland’s premier gaming venue. It’s run by community-focused gamers, hosts a top class gaming club and provides a wonderful venue to enjoy your games. With lots of space, high quality tables and wargaming terrain, it’s the ideal location for games of all types.
I look forward to welcoming you for some games at the War Room!
